March Monthly Member Spotlight: Shawna

Posted in ,

No matter how long you’ve been in the quilting community, you know that no two quilters creative spaces are the same.  We all have our own organized chaos, ideas, and systems that we know work best for us. But get us in another quilters sewing space and we WILL go wild with curiosity.

This Monthly Member Spotlight features Shawna and her creative space!

Name: Shawna Desrosiers

Facebook Name: Shawna Desrosiers – but I’m not active on fb, just use it to check VTMQG 🙂

Instagram Name: @fromshawna

When did you join VTMQG? July 2016

When brought you to VTMQG? I first learned about the guild during the Heather Jones class at Nido. When a lot of the same fun people were at the following Carolyn Friedlander class, I decided to join.

When did you start quilting? 2009. I made Lizzy House’s Marble Champ quilt. Because everyone should start off quilting with full circles, right?…

Why do you quilt? I’m always cold 🙂 I enjoy making beautiful things that can be useful. The myriad ways to play with fabric, and the millions of fabrics to play with, fascinate me.

What was your most recent fabric purchase? A handful of neutrals at Joann’s in December. I’ve given myself a fabric buying moratorium this year, at least until there’s a visible dent in the stash.

What is on your “to make list”?  Wedding gift, baby gift, very belated wedding gift, block of the month quilt, and a hundred other things

What is something you struggle with? Neutrals! I love them in other peoples work, but have a hard time choosing them for my own work.

What do you do when you aren’t quilting? Daydream about all the quilts I want to make. Knit. Obsess over instagram. Drink tea. Make presents. Read. Scroll Pinterest for more ideas of quilts and things I want to make.

What kind of machine do you sew on? Juke 2010q that I absolutely love! It’s opened up my whole quilting world!

Describe your sewing space in three words? Craftroom-with-a-bed? Colorful, creative, chaos.

Where do you sew the most? My bedroom, because that usually doubles as the craftroom.

What is your most useful (or least useful) notion? I really love the little pipe-cleaner machine cleaning tool Anya made!

Anything else you’d like to say? I am so glad I took the classes at Nido that led me to this guild. I truly appreciate this wonderful, supportive, encouraging community!

Show us some photos of your sewing space!

Left to Right: Rebel quilt mini pattern by Libs Elliot, made for my swap partner in the MQG swap; Pegasus and Unicorn quilt block patterns by Robynie Patterns; Emma’s Migration, pattern by Yara Greuter; Wonky Pinwheel quilt collab with Whitney Arlene Crispell.

Shawna, thank you for sharing with us! Your design wall is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Your warm, colorful space, has us inspired to incorporate and embrace more color in our next projects. Long live color!

And that’s a wrap for March’s Monthly Member Spotlight. See you next month with a whole new member and a whole new sewing space!
