November Monthly Member Spotlight: Carla

Posted in ,

No matter how long you’ve been in the quilting community, you know that no two quilters creative spaces are the same.  We all have our own organized chaos, ideas, and systems that we know work best for us. But get us in another quilters sewing space and we WILL go wild with curiosity.

We have all been there, which is why we’re launching this new online series called Monthly Member Spotlight. It is our pleasure to introduce Carla!

Name: Carla White

Facebook Name: glowbirdy

Instagram Name: @glowbirdy1

When did you join VTMQG? I joined VTMQG one year after it started at the insistence of a friend, and have thoroughly enjoyed being a member.

When did you start quilting? I started quilting seriously in 2008, but made a couple quilts in the 1980’s.

Why do you quilt? Quilting brings color into my life, especially on those cold, dark winter days that seem to last forever.  I like to make colorful quilts and being able to feel all the different kinds of fabric as I sew.  Quilting is my full time hobby.

What was your most recent fabric purchase? My most recent fabric purchase was some black and maroon velvet for making embroidery pictures of hummingbirds.

What is on your “to make list”?  My next project is to make some tiny art quilts that can fit in a 3 x 4 frame.

What is something you struggle with? My greatest problems are always with tension and skipped stitches.  A lot of my art quilts end up being very thick from fusing several layers together which increases those problems.  I also struggle with the computer aspects of my new Viking Designer Epic.

What do you do when you aren’t quilting? When I’m not quilting you would find me reading sci-fi, mystery, action-adventure, and (of course) quilt books and magazines.  I also love to be outside working in my garden and walking.

What kind of machine do you sew on? My home sewing machine is a Viking Designer Epic with Embroidery Attachments.  I also have a Viking Sapphire Quilt 870, a Singer, and a Handi-Quilter Avante 18 Long-arm.

Describe your sewing space in three words? Messy, messy, messy!

Where do you sew the most? I have my machine set up on the kitchen table, with very little room to eat!  I also have a long-arm machine upstairs in the large bedroom.  My whole house is devoted to sewing!

What is your most useful (or least useful) notion? Rotary cutter and rulers.

Anything else you’d like to say? I am venturing out into the art world slowly.  I set up a website with WIX and found it to be quite challenging.  It took 4 days to set it up and put onto Google.  My website address is www.glowbirdyquilts.com.  I also took the plunge and am selling some of my art quilts, tablerunners, potholders, etc. at the CVU Craft Fair on November 25, 2017.  The amount of preparation that is required is really amazing and fun!  Happy Quilting!

Show us some photos of your sewing space!

Thanks Carla for sharing with us. Your color coordinated fabric + thread is very impressive! Please send your organizational skills our way. 🙂

And that’s a wrap for November’s Monthly Member Spotlight. See you next month with a whole new member and a whole new sewing space!
