QuiltCon Charity Challenge Quilt — Details

Posted in ,

Here are the details for our blocks for the QuiltCon West’s 2016 Charity Challenge quilt.

The challenge is improv with intent using a defined color palette. We’ve chosen to use the entire palette with a star theme, planning to donate it the Make A Wish Foundation.

Summary of the requirements from the MQG:

  • Created using improv with intent—no patterns!
  • Final quilt should be in the range of 68”x 88”–72” x 92”.

Fabric selection

The background of your block should be Kona Black. Do not use any other black solid or print. You can purchase Kona Black many places, including locally at Nido and Yankee Pride Quilts.

To incorporate the other colors from the palette, you are encouraged to use prints, but stick to monochromatic prints that read as close-to-solid from a distance. QuiltCon’s site has a list of solids from various manufacturers for color matching.

Example prints:
Robert Kaufman – Quilters Linen – Snow
Lizzy House – Mini Pearl Bracelets – Lemon Curd
Moda – Muslin Mates – Scissors – White
Dear Stella – Mika – Net – Turquoise
Bonnie and Camile – Daysail – Tiny Script – Red
Carolyn Friedlander – Botanics – Crosshatch – Grey

Block size and shape

Whatever you’d like!

We want a variety of star sizes, so there are no specific size requirements. Your stars can be square or rectangular.

Once we’ve collected the blocks, we’ll piece them together with more black to create the quilt top.

Tutorials to inspire

If you missed Janet’s tutorial at the October meeting, here are a few online tutorials to get your creative juices flowing. Don’t feel limited to stars in these styles or sizes!
